. this is "viewpoint." thank you so much for joining us this evening. president obama marked the first hundred days of his second term today with a white house news conference. with foreign policy specifically syria on top of the agenda, now at least 13 people were killed and 70 wounded today by car bombs in the capital of damascus in that country's bloody on-going civil war while at least one child was killed and several people wounded in what witnesses describe as a syrian government air strike on a refugee camp near the turkish border. meanwhile, the guardian reports syrian rebels and the government of bashar al-assad are blaming each other for that chemical weapons attack monday. president obama had previously said the assad government would cross a "red line" if it used chemical weapons. and he sort of repeated that today. >> obama: the use of chemical weapons would be a game changer. not simply for the united states but for the international community. >> john: but mr. obama also seemed in no hurry to move. >> obama: with a we now have is evidence that chemical weapons have been used inside o

the white house is under growing pressure to take some kind of action. so far president obama has been reluctant to get involved, but as abc's jonathan karl reports that may be changing. >> reporter: embattled syrian president bashar al assad the man accused of using chemical weapons on his own people made his first public appearance in more than a month appearing entirely at ease on syrian state tv, touring an electrical plant in damascus. the white house is turning up the heat. >> syria's future cannot include assad. his hands are bathed in blood, the blood of his own people. he has no place in syria's future and no support from the syrian people. >> reporter: senior u.s. officials say the administration is now considering sending weapons to rebel fighters. they have requested anti-aircraft and anti-tank weapons. abc news has learned the first nonmilitary aid to rebel fighters arrived in syria and more is in the pipeline. including body armor, military vehicles, and night vision goggles. sending weapons would be a big escalation, and a move that president obama rejected last year out

to poisoned letters sent to president obama and other officials two eks ago. kristin welker is at the white house for us. what is the latest in these developments? >> reporter: alec, good afternoon to you. fbi officials confirm that special agents did arrest 41-year-old everett dutschke this afternoon, and authorities in tupelo, mississippi, say that the arrest is in connection with those ricin-laced letters that were addressed to president obama and members of congress. at this point in time though, no charges have been filed and no word on what specific charges will be filed. he is being held in a detention center expected to be arraigned on monday. now, his home was actually investigated by authorities tuesday and wednesday. so reporters have been outside of his house on a number of different days this week, alex. our local affiliate actually interviewed him earlier this week. take a listen to what dutschke had to say. >> i had absolutely nothing to do with those letters and the person that was -- her defense attorney or his defense attorney said -- steered them in my direction because i

reconnect business to the white house? >> that's the hope of the administration, certainly. she's somebody who had a close relationship with obama as a fund-raiser, somebody from his hometown. the labor troubles that you mentioned will probably add to her credibility in dealing with business because so of of the suspicion that business people usually have of democrats is that they're too closed to organized labor. so that probably will help her in the confirmation fight with republicans although it makes some democrats uneasy. some people are uneasy with the whole idea of taking people who raise money for a candidate and put them in power. but i expect that she will overcome that, be confirmed and so will mike froman who has been serving the administration, as the president said, doing economic international policy. i expect, as they depart for mexico, he is likely to have a relatively smooth and low drama confirmation fight. >> interesting. despite the concerns the president expressed. thank you very much, john howard in washington. >>> the ecb and jobs numbers tomorrow, how can you play
